Small Graffito Trunk covered in blue velvet
The idea of the decorated box takes its cue in the Florentine craft tradition from the ancient hope chest of 14th and 15th century Florence.
The graffito technique of decoration represents one of the most ancient and precious Florentine techniques.
A description of it can be found in the “Libro dell'arte” by Cennino Cennini (14th century) and in “Vite dei più eccellenti pittori” by Giorgio Vasari (15th century).
This technique was, therefore, passed down from artist to artist and workshop to workshop up to nowadays.
It is a complex method: the wooden object is covered by a layer of plaster on which gold leaf is applied, after sanding, with a hot tempera.
After this, a layer of milk-based or egg white-based tempera is painted on the surface.
Once it has dried on the object, the decoration is drawn freehand, with a soft wood style, bringing to light the gilding below.
